Neutral Nails - my 4 favorite!

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Hi! Soo nail polish color is one of those personal beauty things because colors sit differently on each and every person, but these are my FAVORITE and most worn colors season after season and year after year!

Here they are:

1. Essie - Ballet SlippersThis one is the most sheer of all 4 here – it has a pink tint and has been one of my favs FOREVER (seriously, ask my mom!) I was also wearing this color when I got engaged so it will forever hold a special place in my little heart.

2. OPI - Don't Bossa Nova Me Around -       This is actually my current favorite on the list. This is one that looks very different person by person. At the Nail Salon I go to, the owner recommended this to me knowing I have a thing for neutrals…and I’ve been wearing it on and off ever since.

3. Essie - Fiji - So, this is probably the least versatile of all of these. It’s really a 3 season color, and hey, I even wear it in Winter, but it is really more of a bright, opaque pink. I love it, and still consider a neutral, but it looks better in those warmer months.

4. Essie - Urban Jungle Just like all the others, I love this color! It’s versatile, light, sort of a grey-ish, tan-ish, pink & purple hued neutral. Obviously that doesn’t help you guys at all…but it is very similar to #2, with more grey.

Long story short, all of these colors are easy to wear & I love them all!

What are your favs??

Beach Wave Essentials

Wednesday, March 25, 2015

tee by: coco & pine (etsy)

OK, so it’s not exactly beach weather yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock a beachy wave!

I've been trying to show you all a beach wave tutorial, but unfortunately, my technology is NOT working like I want it to! (Basically, I take small sections of hair, about a 1/2 inch thick, and wrap the center of each section (halfway down) just once around the curling iron. Hold for 15 seconds, drop, and then wrap the bottom section that is still straight around once to create a soft little wave. Spritz with hairspray, move on to the next section. Easy peasy, ladies! (I swear, I will make the tutorial happen very soon!)

Here are the 3 Beach Wave Essentials I swear by to achieve the beach wave look in any season:

  1. Conair 1 ½ Inch Curling Iron – I cannot say enough good things about this curling iron. It is my most used hair tool (yes, including my blow-dryer, which I don't use more than once or twice a week, and mostly in winter!) Seriously, this curling iron is $13.99 (!) at Target and will last FOREVER. By forever I mean seriously like 5 years. It has a wide barrel which allows for very loose, un-done, effortless, beachy waves. I can't stress enough, you need a wide barrel curling iron for this look. I hardly ever use the clamp so they are not as "perfectly" curled, but it's there if you need it, which is a great option. Get it here, or at your local Target --> Conair 1 1/2 Inch Curling Iron
  2. Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray (Medium Finish) - I use this Moroccanoil hairspray above my beloved L'Oreal Elnett Hairspray primarily for the fact that it smells SO good, not going to lie. But, Elnett works just as well (get it here: L'Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray). Really though, the Moroccanoil holds just as well as the Elnett but doesn't leave your hair stiff, which is great. I'm all for a strong hold hairspray for the purpose of keeping my hair in tact, but I hate the sticky, crinkle in your fingers feeling of a strong hairspray that is reminiscent of my childhood dance days with tight french braids (no offense Mom, you did a great job), and 8 gallons of hairspray. I LOVE Moroccanoil products because they honestly work and you really get what you pay for.  I opt for the Medium Finish because I think it still gives a strong hold without being too heavy, which allows for the undone, beach wave look. Get it here Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray or at
  3. A good brush for LIGHT texturizing to create volume - Honestly, I use my Wet-Brush for this! I know plenty of gals who opt for a true teasing brush (thin, single row of bristles), but for me, I like to cast a wider net with my "texturizing", as I like to call it, to create beachy, messy volume without teasing. So, you really need brush that you can use for light teasing to create volume. The key here is volume and texture, so I don't tease at my roots, I actually take the middle and ends of my hair and lightly back-comb to create some texture. Think about a day at the beach, or slept-in, day 2 hair. Some areas are thicker, some are thinner, some areas with a different texture than others. Back-combing certain sections lightly, not dramatically, will create a more natural look. Get the Wetbrush here, or use any old brush you've got!
Honestly, these 3 are the only thing you will need. I don't use a salt spritz, or a "beach wave" product, I really believe it's all about the manner in which you wave your hair and the texture you can create. Nothing really compares to the texture of REAL beach hair after a day in the salt water & sun, but this will have to do for now.

The Ultimate Neutral - Denim

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

It's no secret, I love denim. And I don't play favorites. Denim shirts, pants, dresses, jackets, I think it's all great. Why? Denim is the ultimate neutral. When it comes to clothes, I consider a neutral anything that is versatile enough to be worn with most of the colors of the rainbow. An unassuming, easy to blend color.

So, not only does denim blend with every other color imaginable, but it even works WITH ITSELF. Ha - and you thought I couldn't convince you.

I would also like to add that in my book, neutrals are not boring. No, not ivory, light brown, or grey. I know, I know. You can disagree, but I think that neutrals are ultimately flattering for everyone because of their characteristic blend-able quality. Does this mean you should dye your hair grey and wear a grey tee with grey jeans? Yes. Or, you could just throw on a denim button down and call it a day, the choice is yours :-)

I've linked to some of my favorite denim items that are oh so neatly folded above in my Instagram (@shannonfreid_) photo:

Now get out there & rock your denim! After all, casual Friday is right around the corner  :-)

Skin Care - My Current Obsessions

Sunday, March 15, 2015

Ok so lately I've been obsessed with clearing up my skin. I get occasional break-outs but have noticed that even when my skin doesn't have anything on the surface, I can still see what lurks beneath - gross, I know.

So with our wedding 6 months away (eeee!!!) I headed to my dermatologist to get some help. Right now I'm in the "everything is coming to the surface" phase which let me tell you is not so pretty. I'll spare you (and myself) a photo. BUT, these are the 3 things I use daily that really work for my sensitive, combo skin & are Derm approved!

1. Simple Eye Makeup Remover Pads - so many makeup removers irritate my skin - especially on that sensitive skin under my eyes! My mom recommended I try these and they really work & don't irritate my skin! Find this at Target, they are in a little package and are $4.50ish. You'll be like "this tiny package is $5.00?" Yes, the pads are circular and small, but they work for me!

2. Kate Somerville Purify Clarifying Cleanser - I loveee this face wash. It has peppermint in it so it's nice and fresh and wakes you up. It really makes me feel clean which is important. It's pretty strong, so I use this only in the AM and use a dove bar of soap on my face at night (my Derm told me to!). That seems to keep dryness at bay. Get it at Sephora.

3. Josie Maran LIGHT Argan Oil - I know what your thinking - is applying oil to my face really the best idea??? Yes. I thought the same thing but I am now a believer. Apply this to a clean freshly washed and patted dry face, let it soak in, and apply your moisturizer right on top. You can use this AM or PM. I prefer PM! Find this at Sephora, too.

Since I am skin obsessed lately and want the clearest possible for our wedding - what products do YOU use??

The Bachelor - After The Final Rose & THE NEW BACHELORETTE

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

So they really freaked me out on this one. I thought there might be the ole’ switcheroo on ATFR and I was all geared up and ready to start hating Chris. Turns out, he and Whitney are still happily engaged! So I am a happy camper.

(Photo: People Mag)

Becca came out and spoke with Chris and it was pretty anticlimactic. In fact, her face was basically stuck in a permanent smile and the whole thing was just awkward. They both agreed their not ending up together was for the better and that was pretty much that.

Whitney comes out next & her and Chris hug and kiss and are in LOVE. I love love you guys I can’t help it. Sooo Whit still plans to move to Arlington, and have lots of babies. Sounds like not much has changed. I am really really hoping that this relationship lasts.

Jimmy Kimmel comes on and has a little cameo, brings a cow, and thennnnn…

They announce the Bachelorette(s). Chris Harrison really wasn’t lying this time when he said that we would be shocked on ATFR.

So…Kaitlyn AND Britt will both be vying for a spot as The Bachelorette and on the first night the guys will pick who they’d rather date. Which is insane. And also, Kaitlyn could not be more pissed. She told Chris her reaction was “well…this isn’t ideal”.

Can’t say I disagree.

Was it really a toss up between Kaitlyn and Britt?! I thought Kaitlyn was a shoo-in.

Personally, I’m pissed. I hope the guys/producers end up with Kaitlyn as the Bachelorette.

What do you think???

Thank you for reading this season & for all your love!

The Bachelor - The Final Rose

Monday, March 9, 2015

Ok y'all! The moment we've all been waiting for. So, by this point, I am sure you all know the outcome, but before we discuss that, let's recap:

 LOL @ the intro:

"Whitney is the fertility nurse from chicago and Becca, the virgin from California."

So Becca's occupation is being a virgin?!?

Whit up with Chris' family first, and she killed it. I mean, that toast? Not a dry eye in the house. If Chris doesn't propose, I will.

So yes, Whitney was very poised and I think Chris' sisters & mom love her.

The brother in law with the girl at the bar reference? Good call. Maybe he just wants Becca because she doesn't want him? I think Chris definitely really likes Becca but also I think it's funny that they are all talking about her before they've even met her like guys relax you're going to meet her.

Enter: Becca (love her outfit)

So yeah, Becca with the jokes @ the dinner table, definitely kills it but isn't really giving off the vibe that she is super serious. But she does have great hair. Ugh. I'm conflicted.

I have to say that while yeah it's hard for the second girl to come in after the first made such a good impression, it's also like, Becca, maybe give it a little more. At some point you have to at least try to put yourself out there. Can't keep falling back on the "I've never been in love so I don't know". Sort of a not cool. Also, is this really fair to Chris? Part of me thinks he figured out it was Whitney who he wanted weeks before the final rose and kept Becca because he knew she wasn't that into it and it would be easier to let her go in the end than if he kept Kaitlyn or someone else he felt stronger about? I don't knowwwww...

So overall I don't think Becca exactly wow-ed the family. I totally respect her honesty but again starting to feel like she may have been a lost cause from the beginning.

Also sidenote I LOVE Chris' family, especially his mom. She's the cutest.

SO the next day, Chris goes to talk to Becca in the hotel and they basically have another conversation where they break up (again) and then Chris leaves...confused. I really think Becca was supposed to go home in Bali.

Sooo Chris' final date with Whitney  showing her his farms and house is just a further indicator that she definitely wins.

Whitney is totally putting herself out there which is opposite from Becca; but I do think both are being genuine and true to who they are.

The fact that it's sounding like it's Whitney so much is making me think that it's Becca. Whatever ABC does, it works. Every damn season.

OK omg I can't take this I feel like I'm there. How does anyone survive the final rose ceremony?!

First out of the limo? Becca. Goodbye. LOVE Becca's dress & whole thing but first out of the limo is obviously the one to go.

Chris let's her go in the best way possible I think. He's basically like look neither of us are there yet and that's that let's not waste any more time. And then they hug and you can hear his heart beat in his mic.

Becca leaves and I don't think she or anyone else could say she was heart broken -- she seemed pretty indifferent which is basically how she was the entire season because she DIDN'T REALLY LIKE CHRIS! In my opinion. She was waiting for it to be there but it just wasn't.

Next: Whitney (!!!)

She is so nervous and probably freezing she can barely breathe. I feel the same way only I'm just sitting on my couch watching. I am so excited.

AHHH and yes, the proposal happens. TRUE LOVE. Chris loves Whitney, Whitney loves Chris, I love both of them.

I think this is a really good match and just seems so genuine, I mean Chris proposed on his farm in the barn he grew up working in, and I just love it. Seriously, this is great.

Congratulations to them both!!!

So, that concludes Chris Soules stint as The Bachelor. I'm kind of sad. I will have a separate short post on ATFR. As a sidenote - I have so enjoyed writing blog posts about The Bachelor and appreciate every view, comment & kind word about it.

Are you happy with the outcome???

ATFR post to come tonight!

Relaxed Weekend Vibes

Saturday, March 7, 2015

My go to outfit is definitely jeans & a tee. In summer, that changes to shorts & a tee. It's a good way to make accessories stand out (i.e.; hats, jewelry, sunnies, etc) and most importantly (to me, anyway!), keeps you super comfy all day.

These JBrand jeans are my new favorites - I usually opt for a super skinny dark wash, but I went a little rogue and got these slim-fit boyfriend jeans . Since they are slim-fit, they still let you show what ya mama gave ya. The best part? They're on SALE right now!

I paired them with an off-white (ivory-ish) tee from Urban Outfitters - can't find the exact one, (similar - here) & this long maxi sweater. Throw on some accessories and you're good to go. I went with some new sunnies I picked up from Free People that seem to mimic the Karen Walker sunnies everyone has been wearing lately. These from Free People are $20 so I figure it's a good way to see if the shape of them work with my face before splurging! So far, it's looking like a go...:-)

Lastly, I've got my Vegan Leather Bucket Bag that I've been dying to bring out for Spring (hey it's above 30 today) and some of my most worn booties from Dolce Vita - unfortunately it appears they are out of stock everywhere!! Amazon may have them - for reference they are the Java Ankle Booties.

Hope ya'll have a comfy, cozy Saturday!

First of all, crashing bachelor viewer parties...why can't this happen to me!? And like wait you're all surprised? But you're wearing cowboy hats and plaid with full makeup with an entire house of corn themed props?! CALL ME CRAZY, but I'm calling bullshit. If they came to see me, they would be like, aw, who is this poor homeless girl on the couch drinking wine straight out of the bottle? Either that, or it would be exactly like the whiskey house. #lol at chugging the whiskey on national TV after straddling Chris and screaming. PROPS.

Ok so Britt is in the "hot seat" first.

I have to say, Carly was totally mean girling Britt at the end there. Britt is right to be upset about how she treated her. Do I think she manipulated Chris? Sure. But she probably didn't even mean to, I think she might be so positive that everyone else thinks she's fake but maybe she's not? I DON'T KNOW!!!

Carly backpedaling on what she said is just making it worse. Do I sense a little regret???

Kelsey creepily slides into in the hot seat second.

Still...Kelsey is condescendingly talking to the girls?? I mean Kelsey have you learned nothing? And Mackenzie has been silent the entire time, but for some reason the camera keeps panning to her looking like a zombie. This whole thing is creepy at this moment. Kelsey - ENOUGH WITH THE SNIFFLES. YOU ARE SLOWLY KILLING ME. If your going to fake cry at least spare us the fake sniffles and don't use the hosts silk pocket square to blow your nose. Pretty sure he gave that to you for tears, Kelsey, not to blow your nose into.

"No." - Chris Harrison

Ashley S has not cleared anything up for me. She still seems completely insane but also awesome?

"While all of them were getting upset and crying, I was outside picking pomegranates"

Maybe Ashley is the most real person out there.

Also is she going to be on BIP or not??? Someone help a sister out.

Now it's about to get serious.

Jade...Ugh. The earrings, the make-up. I'm sorry. I love Jade, but her look is killing me. I can't even find a pic to post. What is with the return of the glitter eyeshadow this season??? She has the sweetest voice ever and I really think she got her heart broken and now I'm sad. Ugh. Thanks a lot, Chris.

Kaitlyn. I feel bad for her. Ugh. At least she keeps it real. And she is the only one (yes, on earth) that can rock a skin tight white crop top and pencil skirt on national TV. YOU GO, GIRL.

LET'S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD, IT'S 9:36! It's past my bedtime! (Sadly I'm not kidding)

So wait Chris just told Britt he would have never made the decision based on Carly only...I mean...true, I'm glad he said that, and also Britt, enough with the fake crying. Were over it.

Ok so Chris talking to Kaitlyn about her rose ceremony were "wavering" on what you were going to do, Chris? We know you were going to send Becca home until she said she was in love with you...DUH.

Convo with Jade was sad but I think maybe he clarified for her and made her feel better? I mean I get why she's upset about the awkward comment and the disturbing comment...sigh.

Ok so that's prettymuch it. I was pleasantly surprised by Chris' ability to answer all these questions and I think he did a really good job?! You go, prince farming.

Wait, Chris Harrison wrote a book, and it's COMING OUT ON MY BIRTHDAY!? SOMEONE SEND THIS TO ME.

Sorry I've been really overly excitable for this episode...I can't help it.

Comment below with what you think will happen next week! Whit or Becca? My money's on Whit! And ... Who do you think will be the next bachelorette? Kaitlyn?

Thanks for reading!

Get Glowing! My Favorite Sunless Tanner

I swear, Spring is right around the corner. Summer? Not so much. If you're like me, by this time in February you look like Casper and would do anything to get a safe healthy glow so you don't look like you've just been casted in the next episode of Vampire Diaries.

I admit, I used to be a frequent tanning bed go-er, but I've tossed the habit and in recent years opted for a healthier, safer, at home method of getting a glow:

I use these 2 products together to get it right: FRANK Coffee Scrub (Original and Coconut are my favorites) & St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse.

I use FRANK to exfoliate before bronzing. It's simple to use and smells great. It's a coffee scrub that has sweet almond oil & plenty of vitamins and minerals to fight various skin problems. They say you can rub it on dry skin, but I'm not quite bold enough for that. I apply to wet skin and scrub gently. You are supposed to let it sit for several minutes but honestly most of the time I'm too impatient since you can't do much once you have it on besides stand in the shower. Sidenote: I use it on my face from time to time, and apply, lightly (very lightly) scrub, and then let it sit for a couple minutes before rinsing.

You'll notice that the scrub really makes you feel soft after (the oils are responsible for this), and bonus: if you are super sensitive skinned, their coconut version is made nut-free and is easier on your skin!

After I'm nice and exfoliated, I use a big self-tan applicator (not pictured) to apply the St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse on my body. For my face, I use a smaller applicator, and if I run out, I use a cotton ball. The applicators that St.Tropez sells are great and although they are a little pricey, you can rinse them and reuse with your next application. It goes on smoothly and because it's a mousse, you don't have globs of this stuff that you are trying to control. St.Tropez has tons of different kinds of bronzer but I opt for the mousse for that reason - it's light and airy and doesn't slide all over the place or collect in certain spots. You can later it to get a darker bronze, but be careful, like many sunless tanners this darkens in the hours after application. I would recommend waiting and reapplying if necessary after several hours.

One more thing - wash your hands after applying! Even with the mitts you may not realize you have gotten it on yourself when opening the bottle or closing - so wash wash wash!

What are your favorite bronzers or exfoliation methods? Have any of you tried Frank or St. Tropez yet?

Crown Braid

Sunday, March 1, 2015

Yesterday I posted a crown braid on Instagram (@shannonfreid_) and promised to show you guys how to recreate it. It's SO easy and is such a versatile look - here are the steps!

1. Take a small section of hair from right behind your ear. You want to leave a chunk of hair in the front, especially if you are doing a half-up hairdo with the crown braid like I did yesterday. Depending on the length of your hair, you may have to go further up in order for the braid to wrap around to the other side. In that case, start higher up, and at the end, wrap the front piece around to create a half-up hairstyle that will cover the start of your braid.

2. Braid that small section into a simple 3 strand braid. Tie it off at the end with a small clear elastic (you can buy a pack of like 200 at Target for a few bucks).

3. Pull apart the braid. This is the most fun step. You should hold the base of the braid right by the elastic and use your other hand to pull apart the strands of the braid. The purpose of this is to create a fuller, bigger, messier braid. If you want to keep your braid tight, that is totally up to you!   My philosophy (after watching Amber Fillerup pull apart her braids) is that you can never really pull them apart too much. If you do, you can usually fix it by tucking a section back in or pulling from the base to get it back in line. If all else fails...start over!

4. Secure the braid on the other side of your head behind your ear with a bobby pin (or 2). You can play around with where you want the braid to land on your head - some prefer it more towards the front, some more towards the back. Whenever you are satisfied with how it looks, secure it behind your ear (or in the same place where you started your braid) with a bobby pin. I always use the "blonde" bobby pins so that it hides it a little better. If you are blonde, you NEED these! Go get them at Target when you pick up your clear elastics, they are right next to them :-)

Now you should have the perfect crown braid! Keep in mind for step 2 you can really try whatever kind of braid you want for different looks. A fishtail crown looks just as good! I pulled my hair back into a bun so you can see what it looks like as that, too!

Please let me know if you recreate it & show me how it looks!

Now go give yourself the crown you deserve :-)
